This week was a very good one indeed! American citizens have come together and voted Barack Obama into office. We now have a better chance to regain our status in the world. I was so nervous Tuesday night, during the count, because I did not want a repeat of what our country has experienced for the last eight years. I know that any real change would not and is not going to occur for a some years to come, but at least now I know that we have a much better chance. John McCain, like most republicans, does not care about the advancement of Black people or poor people. Instead, they are more concerned about their wealth and keeping their wealth. Now do not get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with having wealth. There is something wrong when you have five houses and ten cars but there is a person without shelter, or a family that has no running water, or a single mother who has to live in a shelter, or a family that has no food, or even a family that can not afford to send their child(ren) to college. Although I am very happy and proud of our President Elect Barack Obama, I just hope that he really carries forth on his promises of change. Most of all, I hope and pray that he implements a plan that will benefit Black people and poor people. Yes, we voted for change. Yes, we have made history by electing a Black man. So now is the next step. Is this Black man going to change things for Blacks and poor people in America? Or are things going to continue to be the same for Blacks in America? I do not know but I hope he makes us proud. I'm not looking for a hand out but I'm looking for help.

I definitely believe if change is going to happen, this is the time. I believe Obama cares about the interest of America as a whole. That includes those who have been forgotten and buried deep underneath the ideal of rich white America. Obama is, I believe, a voice they, and many others, have been waiting to hear for a long time. Of course now, it is very early to tell. But that's what hope is all about. A chance and an opportunity to engage in something greater.
I believe he has a long way to go. This is the first step in a long walk across the world, and the job he's looking to do can carry out successfully if he gets the help he has said he needs. He needs help from even those who opposed him. That is the only way to effectively and efficiently get things done for the best interest of society. But there will be those who will not support Obama, just making it harder for him to carry out effective change. But either way you look at it, change is here. For so long, America has painted a common picture on the canvas of America. And for so long, the picture has looked the same. America has just allowed President-Elect Barack Obama to throw white paint all over that canvas. A chance to start over.
Historically "change" has come to America with the election of an African-American for president. I think that the expectation of many Blacks in this country is that the president-elect will focus a lot attention and energy to the plight of the poor and Black community. You see there is still many in this country that would like to stifle the advancement of Black people and other minorities in this country. I mean, look at the issue of affirmative action and how many people feel that we should do away with it, for whatever reason. Racism is still very much alive in this country and its main basis is HATE.
Barack Obama has serious challenges ahead of him, the economy is in total disarray and on the verge of collapse, the expectation of many in the Black community for him to be our "saviour" and admonish whites for their treatment of us over the years. The US political system is marred with corruption and selfish politicians who have their own agenda and that agenda mostly does not include African-Americans. At the end of the day, white America still is the majority in Washington and whoever is in the Oval office is still limited in his ability as it relates to power, the presidents power is not absolute...remember that Congress still exists and if certain legislation does not fit the main stream or if policies or ideas are to liberal or conservative then effort to achieve positive goals that would benefit Americans on a whole is marred and stifled and particularly when it comes to positive growth and advancement for Blacks and Latinos....many in Washington and in this country would love for Black people to remain in positions of "nothing"!
However, don't be dismayed because we have made great strides and come a long way...so I believe that the process is going to still be a slow one. But CHANGE will come and hopefully with the president-elect the process of "true" change will start with him but a lot of our problems will still be there. Hope, faith and determination is what must remain consistent with Black people, we are a STRONG people and history has shown that.
I'm not going to write a mini blog as a comment as the rest of the commentators did, but I will say that there are actions that people can take after voting that can insure change in our nation. Often times the reason we screw ourselves over is not because we elected the WRONG man, but because we didn't put pressure on that man to make the right decisions, we didn't participate in events that would effect our nation, and simple things that we could do locally we over looked... I'm glad everyone is so politically aware as of so recently, but I hope this isn't just a fad.
Change will come to those who seek it. Change can occur immediately. For instance, start recycling and Go green. It is a small task to complete in order to do your part in tackling the issue of global cimate change. Barack Obama has done a great job of inspiring people to vote. Now is his time to inspire our nation to change for the better. We need to focus on ourselves first and foremost. We need to rely on the administration to lower costs, but we must also concentrate on budgeting and managing our income.
Well only time will tell if he does or does not. From his campaigning over the last year, it looks as if he has the working class on his mind as far as progressing them to a better state. Personally anything is better than McCain in the office, he would be another Bush. I wish Obama the best and hope he can change things but that doesnt take any additional responsibility off of the citizens, we still need to do our part.
I love how everyone is excited about the new president. I am glad that the right canidate was elceted not only because he is blacked but because he is qualified. We stress the race and gender iissue a little too much in America and talk about change too much to but the nation who has not changed. Ok we have changed but for the worse. I think president elect Obama will finally be what America needs to show what change is. I hope that with all of his plans he has in mind that America will so just that…change.
